Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Each Bed is printed from PETG, a widely used plastic because of its great properties. It is chemically inert, durable, and FDA food contact compliant. Your plants will be safe and healthy.

  • Most potting soil mixtures work well with the passive watering system. When coco coir (provided with every Bedfellow) is mixed into traditional garden soil, all should go smoothly. However, very dense soils can cause trouble; it may become so saturated that oxygen no longer reaches the roots. Most importantly, do not stuff your Bedfellow! Lay the soil down, give it one or two pats, and they’ll be happy.

  • Hi, my name is Cole. I’m a college kid who enjoys plants, but always sucked at guessing when they need water. I was looking for some solutions, and learned about wick-watering. Lightbulb… if there is a way to monitor the water level from outside, this could be an all in one planter. I tried to develop a simple and reliable water monitor. The twelfth version actually worked; I was jumping around in the kitchen so excited.

So now were here… giving plastic waste new life.

  • The water level is tracked by a miniature buoy. It floats inside the reservoir against the front wall, traveling up and down its elevator to stay in place. However, we cannot see the buoy, so we must transfer information outside somehow. To solve this, a strip of magnetic viewing film is placed outside the elevator. Now if we give the buoy a little magnet, he’ll create a line on the magnetic film and show us his location.
